The idea

Every window holds a different kind of light.

Walk the Grand Strand after dark and the beachfront turns into a wall of windows. Hundreds of rooms stacked up over the sand, some blazing, some dark, some with one lamp on and somebody sitting out on the balcony.

Every one of those squares is somebody's life for the week, or for good: a family on vacation, a retiree in a rental, a man alone in the low-country heat. Same ocean, same sun, but nobody's seeing it the same way.

That's the song. What you see from the outside isn't the whole story.

“What you see on the inside is all that’s true.”
A low beachfront motel at dusk, one balcony lit gold with a man sitting in a chair

Lyrics

Verse 1

Down on the Grand Strand where the salt wind blows
Tall glass faces line the nighttime glow
Every window holds a different kind of light
Every room got a story working through the night

Verse 2

One condo shining like it never knew the rain
One with curtains hiding a little bit of pain
Some folks rise easy, some folks bend low
Some got a front porch, some got nowhere to go

Chorus

Windows, windows looking out to sea
Same blue water, but it's not the same to me
Different faces in the same old sun
Different lives in the condos, one by one
Windows, windows everybody's got a view
What you see outside ain't all that's true

Instrumental

(guitar)

Verse 3

There's a family laughing in a polished suite
There's a lonely man sitting in low country heat
A retired dream in a rental by the dunes
And young one's chasing daylight past the afternoon

Verse 4

Some keep their shades low, some keep 'em wide
Some let the whole world see what's tucked up inside
And the ocean just keeps on rollin' on by
Like it knows every lie and every prayer in the sky

Chorus

Windows, windows looking out to sea
Same blue water, but it's not the same to me
Different faces in the same old sun
Different lives in the condos, one by one
yea, Windows, windows everybody's got a view
What you see outside ain't all that's true

Bridge

From the top floor down to the ground
Everybody hears that tidal sound
Some are lives built to withstand, some are built to fade
But the light comes through whatever gets made

Final Chorus

Windows, windows looking out to sea
Same blue water, but it's not the same to me
Different faces in the same old sun
Different lives in the condos, one by one
yea, Windows, windows everybody's got a view
What you see outside ain't all that's true

Outro

Yeah, what you see on the inside
Is all that's true
