Lemonade Lady

Eric Morton

She sells lemonade down by the fishing pier, and every fall she’s gone.

The idea

Down where the pier meets the morning tide.

Every beach town has somebody like her. A hand-painted stand by the fishing pier, a sweating jar of lemonade, and a woman who never asks who you think you are.

The fishermen let their lines go slack. The salesmen keep circling back. And when September blows in and the boardwalk empties, she’s gone without a word.

All winter the old men walk the pier, watching for that stand to come back with the first warm day.

“Save me a cup, save me a place in line.”
A long fishing pier at first light, the sun low over the water

Lyrics

Verse 1

Down where the pier meets the morning tide
There's a hand-painted stand with the shutters wide
She pours it cold from a sweating jar
And never asks who you think you are
Her perfume was of rain, and peel, and sea
Sweet as the summer and just as free

Pre-Chorus

Sold lemonade by the fishing pier
Where the tourists come and go, year after year

Chorus

Lemonade Lady, you had a way
Of turning a hard road into a Saturday
One taste of summer, one look from you
And every leaving man forgot what he came to do

Verse 2

Fishermen staring with their lines gone slack
Salesmen in loafers keep circling back
They'd pay five dollars, they'd pay ten
Then turn around and buy one again
She hums to the gulls and she counts her change
Looks right through them like they're out of range

Chorus

Lemonade Lady, you had a way
Of turning a hard road into a Saturday
One taste of summer, one look from you
And every leaving man forgot what he came to do

Telecaster Solo

(instrumental)

Verse 3

Then September blows in with a cooler breeze
And the boardwalk empties like falling leaves
She doesn't say goodbye, doesn't leave a line
Just a padlocked stand and a sun-bleached sign

Bridge

All winter long the old men say
"She'll be back come the first warm day"
They walk the pier when the gray rolls in
Watching the road for that stand again

Final Chorus

Lemonade Lady, you had a way
Of turning a hard road into a Saturday
One taste of summer, one look from you
And every leaving man forgot what he came to do

Outro

Lemonade Lady, rain or shine
Save me a cup, save me a place in line
